Diane Gulyas, director of development for the College of Arts, Sciences and Letters, recently received the President’s Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Detroit Chapter. This honor is awarded to a fundraising professional who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the AFP Greater Detroit Chapter. As the director of development, Gulyas works with the CASL dean, faculty, staff and administrators on alumni outreach and major and planned gift cultivation. In addition, she serves as treasurer of the Board of Directors for the AFP Greater Detroit Chapter and as an honorary board member of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Downriver.

Jamie Shinhee Lee’s article, “Go away, mute English!: Selling English in web advertising,” was published in Journal of Creative Communications. Her study “examines 20 randomly selected web-advertising texts about English language institutes and programs in South Korea. The findings of the study suggest that the concept of ‘global’ is commonly incorporated into cyber marketing materials, recurring as the main rationale for why Koreans need to study English.” Lee is associate professor of linguistics.

College of Education, Health, and Human Services Dean Janine Janosky participated as keynote speaker at the World Congress on Nursing in Dubai, UAE. Janosky spoke about the importance of fostering and developing social and physical environments that promote wellness and good health for all. More information is available on the CEHHS blog.
