News from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs: April 2019

Meet ORSP’s new lead contracts and grants specialist, Aleesa Toman, and learn more about the $80k in recent external funding.

External grants received

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs would like to congratulate the following faculty members on receiving external funding for their research.

Juliette Roddy, Professor of Public Policy and Health Policy Studies, CASL College-Wide Programs, is participating as a Co-Investigator on a project titled “Improving Reproducibility of Respondent Driven Sampling through Adaptive Design.” Approximately $80,500 will come to UM-Dearborn for Dr. Roddy’s component of this project, which was awarded to the Survey Research Center at U-M’s Institute for Social Research in Ann Arbor. This research will examine "respondent driven sampling" (RDS), a recruitment method for hard-to-sample populations that are rare in number and/or elusive due to highly-stigmatized or illicit behaviors, such as people who inject drugs, and work to develop a design framework to provide reliable tools for successful implementation and analysis of RDS.

Summer Undergraduate Research Experience update

The 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program application period ended March 15. The SURE program enables UM-Dearborn faculty to introduce undergraduate students to potential educational and research-oriented career paths and provide them with guidance in the practice of research. The SURE program accomplishes this through faculty mentorship and training while students participate in a faculty member’s research or scholarly project. Students receive a stipend of $3500 while they participate in the program, which runs from May-August. Students are also required to attend a series of Lunch & Learn sessions covering topics such as Responsible Conduct in Research, Graduate School Applications, and Successful Presentation Techniques.  24 applications were received for this year’s program, representative of all four of our campus' colleges. Awardees will be notified during the first week of April.

Staff changes in the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs

Please join the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) in welcoming our newest staff member, Aleesa Toman. Toman joins ORSP on April 1 as a lead contracts and grants specialist. Toman obtained her undergraduate degree in business administration from Western Michigan University, and holds an MBA from Wayne State University, where she also participated in a Study Abroad program in Italy. She comes to us from the Center for Molecular Medicine & Genetics at Wayne State University, where she has served a grants administrator for the past four years. Prior to that, Toman worked as an accountant in the University of Michigan's Office of Sponsored Programs in Ann Arbor for three years. Toman will provide pre-award support to the campus faculty by assisting with budget and proposal development as well as preparation and submission of grant application packages. She will also help coordinate and administer the Campus Grants program, and provide general research administrative support for the campus. We are delighted to have her as part of our team and encourage you to stop by our offices in IAVS to say hello and introduce yourself!

Toman stepped into the vacant position left by Amanda Hill, who accepted a role in Financial Services in January, but has been assisting part time in ORSP since then. As of April 1, Hill is full time in her new position and ORSP would like to thank her for her service to our campus’ research community over the past four years!
