The Office of Research update shares information about research during the pandemic, available grants and awarded funding.

Research During the Global Pandemic

Questions about doing research during this uncertain time? The UM Office of Research has created an information portal about COVID-19 that provides information on the impacts of COVID-19 on research at the University of Michigan’s three campuses. There you will find FAQs regarding research operations during the pandemic period, funding opportunities, current research projects, and other news specifically related to the coronavirus.

Call for Proposals – Campus Grants Competitive Programs

Applications for the spring 2020 Competitive Programs deadline are now being accepted! The links to each program below will take you to the guidelines, which includes a link to the application website where you can complete and submit your application. All proposals must be submitted via our web-based portal by 5 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2020. There will be no extensions and applications not received by the deadline will not be considered for funding. 

Faculty Professional Development - provides up to $900 for activities that include, but are not limited to, Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) courses, workshops, seminars, and travel to professional conferences. (Availability of funds is limited; applications will be accepted until all funds are awarded.) NOTE: U-M has suspended all international and domestic air travel until further notice due to COVID-19, therefore we are currently unable to approve any funds requested for travel.

Open Invitation Campus Grants Programs

Proposals for the following programs are accepted throughout the fiscal year. Availability of funds is limited; applications will be accepted until all funds are awarded. NOTE: U-M has suspended all international and domestic air travel until further notice due to COVID-19, therefore we are currently unable to approve any funds requested for travel.

Grants for Faculty:
Faculty Research Mini Grant - provides up to $800 for non-salary resources that enable faculty research and other scholarly activities.
Faculty Research Publication and Dissemination - provides up to $300 per year for peer-reviewed scholarly publication costs. 
Faculty Research Copy Editing Support - provides up to $200 per year for copy editing peer-reviewed scholarly publications, limited to editing required by publisher. Applicant must secure a match of $1 for every $2 of Dearborn Office of Research requested funds. 

 Grants for Students:
Graduate Student Independent Research - provides up to $2,500 for independent research projects conducted by UM-Dearborn graduate students as a part of a course for credit and supervised by a faculty member. (Research must be allowed under the current COVID-19 restrictions and activity must be completed prior to student’s graduation.)
Undergraduate Student Independent Research - provides up to $500 for independent research projects conducted by UM-Dearborn undergraduate students as a part of a course for credit and supervised by a faculty member. (Research must be allowed under the current COVID-19 restrictions and activity must be completed prior to student’s graduation.)

Winter 2020 Results: $47,787 in Campus Grants Awarded

At their March 27, 2020 meeting, the Research Support Committee of the Faculty Senate reviewed 9 applications and awarded 7 peer reviewed campus grants totaling $46,787 to UM-Dearborn faculty and students in the following categories:

Research Initiation & Development – provide financial support for faculty research projects designed to lead to a proposal for external funding with a strong potential of being awarded.

UM-Dearborn Scholars – provide financial support for faculty research and scholarship, including creative activities in the arts, for projects with funding needs not addressed by other support programs within or outside the University.
