Academic service learning, innovative teaching practices and community-based research rank high on the priority list at University of Michigan-Dearborn.

The University now has an opportunity to expand on those three pillars through additional funding opportunities. Faculty members are encouraged to submit grant proposals for three such programs – Academic Service-Learning Course Designation, Advancement of Teaching and Learning Fund and Community-Based Research Seed Grants.

“We believe that these seed grants represent an important step in eliminating some of the barriers that have thwarted faculty from doing this kind of work in the past,” said Ismael Ahmed, associate provost for Integrated Learning and Community Partnerships.

Faculty members can receive a $500 stipend, repeatable up to three times, for teaching a class designated as an Academic Service-Learning course.

Are supplies an issue? Grants can help provide financial and administrative support for faculty members to organize groups, purchase supplies or pay for other expenses that will lead to enhanced teaching and learning on campus.

Grants also can benefit UM-Dearborn’s mission to promote research that’s developed in collaboration with community partner organizations.

Make sure and register soon because the application deadline is March 12. A faculty committee will review all applications and funds will be disbursed by April 13. Further questions about the application process can be emailed to [email protected].

“This is an exciting time for our campus and I am thrilled to be part of such engaged colleagues,” Ahmed said. “I look forward to seeing the many creative and innovative proposals generated by faculty from across the campus.”
