All students, faculty and staff on all three campuses of the University of Michigan are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and submit their vaccination information before the start of the fall term, university officials announced today. The vaccine requirement also applies to those working or learning remotely.
“After considerable thought, discussion and input, U-M President Mark Schlissel, UM-Flint Chancellor Deba Dutta, Michigan Medicine CEO Marschall Runge, and I, working with many others, determined that this is the best way forward for the University of Michigan community,” Domenico Grasso, UM-Dearborn chancellor, wrote in an email to campus.
University of Michigan-Dearborn leadership, Faculty and Staff Senates and Student Government were also consulted and supportive of this important decision.
The university is requiring all students, faculty and staff to do one of the following no later than Aug. 30:
● Submit proof of vaccination (partial or completed)
● Apply for a medical or religious exemption
Information about medical and religious exemptions will be shared by Aug. 4.
“As we have seen over the past 18 months, the trajectory of this pandemic continues to ebb and flow. Many organizations such as Google, the Veterans Administration and hundreds of universities across the country, including many Big Ten schools and the entire University of California and California State University systems, are mandating vaccinations,” Grasso wrote.
The COVID-19 vaccination is free, easily accessible, extremely effective and has been proven safe. UM-Dearborn will soon announce information regarding an on-campus vaccination clinic.
“Keeping Mission First and taking care of our People Always, we are well prepared for a robust and successful fall semester. As always, we will continue to monitor the state of the pandemic and make necessary changes to keep our community safe while delivering an outstanding education for our students,” Grasso wrote.
