Detroit events planned to commemorate U-M’s founding in the city

The Bicentennial Detroit Seminar and Bicentennial Founding Ceremony will take place Friday, September 15.

Mark your calendar for Friday, September 15, a day of special events commemorating the University of Michigan’s 1817 founding in Detroit. The Detroit Festival will celebrate and reflect upon U-M’s connections to the city in the past, present and future.

The day begins with the Bicentennial Detroit Seminar, where Michigan faculty and alumni will present engaging programs focused on investing in Detroit, educational pathways, innovative technologies and innovative arts. College of Engineering and Computer Science Dean Tony England will moderate a breakout session on innovation in technology.

Afterward, Grand Circus Park will be the home base for a Bicentennial Founding Ceremony emceed by U-M alumna and journalist Carmen Harlan with public and university leaders. There will also be a public celebration featuring live entertainment, performances, food and exhibits, including a display featuring UM-Dearborn’s work in Detroit.

All events are free and open to the public. Registration is required for the Bicentennial Detroit Seminar, and space is limited.
