The Environmental Interpretive Center has created a new sustainability internship position for the Center that is designed to provide a UM-Dearborn student with an experiential learning opportunity focused around sustainability initiatives and how they connect to ecological realities of the natural world.
The 16-week paid internship will place a student in the Center for 20 hours per week from May to August, an opportunity made possible by the unique urban setting of the Environmental Study Area on which the University is located.
The summer intern will be expected to participate in and manage the Center's sustainability initiatives, including its Community Organic Garden, mushroom garden, rain gardens and composting project. The intern also will be responsible for developing his or her own sustainability project at the Center.
The applicant must demonstrate leadership skills and initiative, as well as possess high quality communication and interpersonal skills. The student applicant may be enrolled in any concentration or program, but will be expected to have taken courses appropriate for an understanding of the natural sciences.
"The idea for this internship is a result of my involvement with the College of Business' Betty F. Elliott Initiative for Academic Excellence and its 'Business of Sustainability' lecture series this year," said David Susko, director of the EIC. "Being on the committee and listening to the COB faculty discuss various sustainability challenges facing society, I was inspired to take another look at the Center to see if there was more we could be doing in terms of sustainability and its relation to the campus and student engagement."
