Reporters. Editors. Photographers. Designers.
It looked more like a newsroom than an anniversary party on March 24 at Fairlane Center.
That’s because journalists who once covered University of Michigan-Dearborn for The Michigan Journal gathered to celebrate 40 years of chasing campus news.
The campus newspaper first went to press in 1971, and over the years, its staff has covered several top entertainers and powerful politicians who visited campus. Whether it involved sports, entertainment or politics, students learned firsthand how to run a newspaper.
This year’s staff decided to organize the anniversary celebration to commemorate former staff members for their work at The Michigan Journal.
“It’s to say ‘thank you’ to them for their hard work and also to celebrate the newspaper still being around,” said Ben Dixon, The Michigan Journal managing editor. “The idea behind this is that news never sleeps because, a lot of the time, we don’t.”
UM-Dearborn alumni who worked for The Michigan Journal also spoke about their experiences at the event, including Jessica Carreras, editor of Dearborn Patch.
