External Grant Awards

Roger Verhey, director of the Center for Mathematics, received $219,238 from the Michigan Department of Education. This will enable him to continue his partnership with local school districts to improve the teaching of mathematics in middle and high school.

Taehyun Shim, associate professor, mechanical engineering, received an $85,993 award from Hyundai Kia Motors. He will provide a training and research experience in vehicle dynamics to a visiting scholar from Hyundia Kia Motors.

Hong Tae Kang, assistant professor, mechanical engineering, received $53,500 from General Motors Company. He will investigate the fatigue characteristics of MIG welded joints of aluminum alloys.

German Reyes-Villanueva, assistant professor, mechanical engineering, received $13,218 from Rouch Industries. He will investigate the effect of strain rate on the tensile properties of advanced automotive grade materials.

David Susko, director of the Environmental Interpretive Center, received a $5,000 grant from Constellation Energy. The grant will fund a program for 5th and 6th grade students in four local elementary schools in which they will use earthworms to compost lunchroom food waste.
