Getting to know Deirdras Jones, the library’s operations and user services supervisor

As the operations and user services supervisor at Mardigian Library, Deirdras Jones supervises staff at the library’s User Services Desk and coordinates interlibrary loan and shelving maintenance. The library’s Social Media Committee sat down with Jones, who chatted with us about her work at the library and what she likes to do for fun outside of work.

What are your main job duties at Mardigian Library and what do you love most about what you do?
As the operations and user services supervisor, I set schedules, manage time cards for, train and supervise student assistants in shelving and MeLCat. I also do stacks maintenance and management, and work with User Services, Tech Services and librarians on shelving and shifting priorities. The best part about my job is interacting with the students.

What do you do for fun outside of work?
Well, when I'm not enjoying my favorite trash reality shows, I freelance photography and video. I also help coordinate an annual fundraiser in my hometown of Flint for youth programs.

What is your undergraduate degree?
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in media arts and studies from Wayne State University.

Do you have any pets?
Yes, I have a cat. Her name is Nala.

Do you have any tips or advice for students?
My advice is to enjoy this time in university because adulting sucks.

The Japan Times Archive is a database of digitized issues of The Japan Times, The Japan Advertiser, The Japan Times & Mail, The Japan Times and Advertiser (Morning ed.) , Japan Times and Advertiser (Evening ed.) and the Nippon Times. It includes all issues from March 22, 1897 through 2010.

HathiTrust Digital Library
HathiTrust is a collaborative repository of digital content including millions of books and other materials. Searches include the catalog records, full text of books, or individual collections. Users can access full-text for items which are viewable in Google Books, scanned by HathiTrust member libraries and the Internet Archive, and books published in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia for which copyright was not renewed. This represents approximately 38 percent of the collection (over 5.1 million items).

Associated Press Collections Online
Associated Press Collections Online includes original wire copy, personal papers, AP stylebooks and internal publications from the Associated Press archives. Hundreds of videos from the AP Archive and thousands of striking images from AP Images Archive add depth to the original reporting and stories from the news agency.
