Sidewalk astronomy event at UM-Dearborn's observatory

September 12, 2011

On Sept. 13, the University of Michigan-Dearborn Observatory will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the annual Sidewalk Astronomy celebration.

The goal of Sidewalk Astronomy is to give visitors an opportunity to view celestial objects through a good-sized telescope, and to learn about the objects they see.  Visitors will tour the facilities, learn about the 16-inch telescope and observe the sun with the solar telescopes (weather permitting).  The Observatory is on the third floor of the campus's Science Learning and Research Center.  This event is free, and is held rain or shine.

Free nighttime public viewing sessions at the Observatory are scheduled for:

  • Sept. 16 - 8:30-10 p.m.
  • Sept. 30 - 8-9:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 28 - 8-9:30 p.m.
  • Nov. 15 - 7:30-9 p.m.
  • Dec. 9 - 7:30 – 9 p.m.

Nighttime sessions are dependent on the weather. Please call the Observatory’s hotline at 313-583-6566 beginning one hour prior to the scheduled start time to learn the status of an event.
