Six students receive CASL alumni affiliate scholarships

October 11, 2010

Six CASL students received alumni affiliate scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year during a special ceremony held by the college's alumni affiliate last month.

Nadiah Algahmi, a senior studying physics; Holly Gerring, a junior studying biochemistry and French studies; Irene Mo, a sophomore studying economics and mathematics; Ann Slagle, a CASL psychology alumna who's now a first-year student in the graduate program in health psychology; Kimberly White, a senior studying psychology; and Steven Young, a senior studying English all received scholarships during the 14th annual event.

The reception provided an opportunity for the six scholarship recipients, along with their parents and other family members, to meet some of the scholarship donors and thank the alumni affiliate volunteers for their work in raising the scholarship funds.

CASL Dean Jerold Hale was on hand to address the faculty, staff, students, alumni and guests about the importance of providing scholarships and the good work that's done by the CASL alumni affiliate.

The CASL alumni affiliate founded its scholarship in 1995 as a way to meet its primary objective - to support the well-being of the college. By supporting outstanding liberal arts students today, the affiliate aims to assure the success of the college for many years to come.

The scholarship is funded by donations received throughout the year, and by funds raised at the annual "November Indulge" fundraiser through the volunteer efforts of alumni affiliate members and the generous donations of many sponsors and contributors. This year's fundraiser will be held Friday, Nov. 5 at the Henry Ford Estate.

In its brief history, the CASL Alumni Affiliate Scholarship has already helped 66 deserving liberal arts students reach their goal of academic excellence. Through the generous contributions of hundreds of alumni and other friends of the college, the group hopes to continue, and expand, the scholarship in coming years.
