The week featured key games by winter varsity athletic teams: men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey. Students who participated in Athletics Week, by going to events and games throughout the week, could win one of five $100 scholarships given away by the UM-Dearborn Athletics Department through a raffle at the games.

“Athletics Week was a great opportunity to promote the Athletics Department and for students to see how fun going to games can be,” said Ben Childs, student assistant for athletics. “We want students, faculty and staff to enjoy going to games and supporting the students who compete for our school.”

The week began Monday when the Athletics Department sponsored an information table at the annual Winter Organization Information Fair. Athletics Department representatives talked with students about upcoming events and what they would like to see at games in the future.

The first game of Athletics Week kicked off Wednesday night, when the women’s basketball team made a furious comeback to tie the game at the end of regulation, before going on to lose a heart-breaker in overtime, 75-71.

The men’s basketball game followed, during which students had an opportunity to win one of two $100 scholarships. The Student Activities Board sponsored a half-court shot during halftime, in which two students had a chance to win a pair of Detroit Pistons tickets.

“Everyone from the Student Activities Board had a great time at the game,” said Matt Meyers, vice president of the Student Activities Board. “We sponsored this event because we knew the members of our group would have a fun time going to the game.”

The week ended with a high-scoring hockey game Friday night, sponsored by Greek Life. The Wolverines won the game 8-3 against the Colorado State University Rams. Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student Life Stanley Henderson was on hand to cheer on both the hockey team and the students who the remaining three $100 scholarships given away during the game. The students were honored during the 1st intermission at center ice.
