The University of Michigan-Dearborn senior volunteers at various sites across Detroit because she cares deeply about her community.
“My life dream is to see my hometown, Detroit, regain its fame for being a wonderfully industrial city,” said Rice, who was named a 2012 UM-Dearborn Difference Maker. “I would like to give people more reasons to spend time in Detroit. I would like to attract tourists and entertainers and businesses to the city. I would also like to open a nonprofit organization that would help homeless people become productive members in society and get back on their feet.”
For Rice, service is just a part of her everyday life. On April 13, Michigan Campus Compact recognized Rice with its Commitment to Service Award.
Rice and fellow UM-Dearborn student Tala Nchamukong were among 33 students statewide to receive the prestigious award that focuses on community involvement and service experience.
“Service is a part of the fabric of what we do at UM-Dearborn, and it goes without saying that it is a core value in our community,” said Amy Karaban, assistant director of civic engagement. “That said, though, I think it’s incredibly important to recognize the students that go above and beyond the normal commitment, and I appreciate the opportunity to see our students honored at the Michigan Campus Compact Student Service Awards. Our students are indeed very deserving of recognition and it was exciting to see them honored at the state level.”
Michigan Campus Compact honored Rice and Nchamukong at its 17th annual Outstanding Student Service Awards Celebration at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing.
Michigan Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university presidents who promote the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged.
The coalition recognized eight other UM-Dearborn students – Sherra Bennett, Ryinta Rochez Brown, Raven Dunn, Brendan Gallagher, Doris Kotori, Molly Manley, Stephanie Salvadero and Kelsey Wydendorf – with the Heart and Soul Award. The award recognizes students for their time, effort and personal commitment to their respective communities through service.
