Greek Life takes the plunge for Special Olympics Michigan

This year’s polar vortex could not stop University of Michigan-Dearborn Greek Life students from jumping into the Detroit River during the annual Polar Plunge last month.

The payoff?

Students raised nearly $10,000 for Special Olympics Michigan.

Students asked for donations for the event before taking the plunge into the freezing Detroit River to collect their money. They considered the 60-second plunge a small sacrifice to make in order to raise thousands of dollars for the cause.

“I volunteered at the Polar Plunge event because it’s such a great cause,” said Savannah Reinhart, a member of Phi Mu sorority. “The small sacrifice that we make on a Saturday morning helps hundreds of people who participate in the Special Olympics activities throughout the year.”

More than 100 people volunteered at the event or took part in the plunge. And the amount raised this year for Special Olympics Michigan was nearly double what they raised last year.

“Greek Life was extremely pleased with the amount we were able to raise for the Special Olympics this year,” said Kristin McDonough, coordinator for Greek Life. “This event continues to grow year after year and we hope that we can double our fundraising efforts and participation again next year.”
