Building Access Policy

Introduction

The University of Michigan – Dearborn considers the safety of its students, faculty, staff, visitors, and property to be of paramount importance and believes that door access is an important component of a comprehensive, University‐wide, security program.

In order to protect facilities and technology, classrooms will be unlocked each morning when the building opens, and locked each evening when the building closes.

Scope

This policy applies to all buildings and classrooms at the University of Michigan–Dearborn.

Procedures

A. Standard Building Hours

The Department of Facilities Operations is responsible for updating Standard Building Hours each semester based on classroom schedules and written departmental needs. Standard Building Hours are determined as follows: Buildings will be opened at least one (1) hour prior to the start of the first scheduled class. Buildings will be locked at 5 pm on weekdays, or 15 minutes after the last scheduled class, whichever is later.

B. Classroom Access

Public Safety will unlock classroom doors each day at the building’s Standard Building Opening Time.

Public Safety will lock classroom doors at the end of each day at the building’s Standard Building Closing Time.
