Inclement Weather and Campus Operations (December 2, 2020)

Dear Colleagues,

This week’s light snowfall brings a reminder that severe winter weather is on the way, which could lead to the occasional weather-related reduction of university operations.

Today there was an article in the Record regarding university policy during emergency reduction of operations due to weather. I would like to summarize our policies and procedures that involve a reduction of operations or campus closure.

The winter season will be unique on our campus because all teaching and the vast majority of support functions will be performed remotely until at least March 1. The expectation is teaching and staff functions, that are being performed remotely, will continue remotely regardless of the weather. After March 1, faculty should plan to pivot in-person classes to remote instruction during inclement weather.

UM-Dearborn essential staff members, typically required to work on campus during a campus closure/reduction of operations (for example, police and facilities operations), will report to campus in accordance with existing departmental procedures. Employees working on campus to provide services (for example, library staff) and those employees required to work on campus on an intermittent basis (for example, HR staff) will be notified by their supervisors regarding changes to their work schedule. This approach will also be utilized for reduction in operations unrelated to weather—such as flooding or a power outage.

If you have any questions about policies or procedures, please contact your supervisor.

Please be safe as you navigate the winter weather and the pandemic.
