Invitation to the Chancellor's Book Club: Klara and the Sun (October 8, 2021)

Dear Colleagues and Students,

We have had an excellent start to the semester. Over this past month, it has been great to be on campus once again. Going to buildings and seeing the hustle and bustle between classes, walking through halls and overhearing lectures, and peaking into labs to witness ongoing research are all reminders of how vibrant and connected our community is. It's a joy to be back in person, together again.

During the summer, in hopes of continuing to foster our connectedness, I announced the launch of The Chancellor's Book Club, a way for all of us to connect by sharing our thoughts about a great book. The initial reading, Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, is the first novel by Ishiguro since he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The book tells the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities and empathetic capability, as she discerns what it means to be human and seeks to fulfill her purpose. NPR has called the book "a masterpiece that will make you think about life, mortality, the saving grace of love: in short, the all of it."

If you had a chance to read the book, I invite you to join me on Wednesday, November 10
3:30 - 5 pm in the Michigan Rooms at Fairlane Center South to discuss Klara and the Sun in small groups and chat about Ishiguro's latest thought-provoking and acclaimed work. This will be an outstanding way to enjoy each other's company as we continue the fall semester.

Please RSVP on the link below.  Light refreshments will be provided.

I hope to see you there!
