Transfer Student Engagement
The Office of Student Life (OSL) is committed to providing transfer students with a rich and transformational college experience. Through various programs, resources, and on-campus partnerships, OSL provides the support needed to transition transfer students to the University with a great sense of connection, engagement, and involvement.
As a transfer student, you are a valued part of our community as you join many other students like you who are committed to pursuing their educational goals. We recognize that transfers have different needs than first-year students, and we are here to make your adjustment and transition into our community as smooth as possible.
CRUISE to Success - Transfer Edition is an opportunity for incoming transfer students to learn more about University life at UM-Dearborn. It is a virtual experience that aims to connect, support, and empower transfer students.
In an engaging hybrid learning environment, participants will have the opportunity to expand on concepts from orientation to ensure academic, personal, and professional success! Participants will reflect upon their individual collegiate and work experiences while connecting to present and future plans. Successful completion will be based on a point system that stems from in session reflections and out of session experiences. Participants who successfully complete the Program will be recognized for their Commitment to Success during the annual Success Celebration!
The Tau Sigma Honor Society is an academic honor society designed specifically to "recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students." The Beta Sigma Chapter at UM-Dearborn, founded in 2009, was the first chapter to be organized in the state of Michigan.
By establishing chapters at four year institutions across the country, we are able to recognize the academic achievement of the most outstanding transfers nationwide and, in the process, help universities better serve their transfer populations. Tau Sigma members (among the most accomplished transfer students on campus) are perhaps the greatest resource available to serve the current and future transfers at your institution.
UM-Dearborn proudly offers thousands of scholarships each year to deserving students. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, leadership, community service, financial need, special talents, or other criteria. Students are encouraged to actively research all scholarship opportunities which are applicable.

Best moment(s) at UM-Dearborn: "I have been immensely welcomed and supported by faculty, staff and many of my classmates...Everyone I meet is super helpful, especially in the Talent Gateway Program...(Additionally), my professors recognize that I am a transfer student and that the semester (Winter 2021) is an unusual one. They continue to offer me resources and continually find ways to provide my classmates and I with a sense of community which has really helped."
Most valuable takeaway(s): "I have learned to ask for help. I’m realizing more and more every day that I now attend a school where the faculty and staff are EXCITED to help students succeed...I came in with doubts that I would feel connected to the school, never having actually attended one class on campus or anything, but I now feel very connected and like a true Wolverine! I learned that having a positive outlook makes for a positive outcome!"
Campus Accomplishments: Fall 2020 Dean’s List, Women in Learning and Leadership Program Nomination, and Talent Ambassador with the Most Challenges Award. Kelly also owns her own organic skincare business (@etherealskinorganics).
Tips for transfer students: "Do not hesitate to ask for help, no matter what undergrad level you are! Do not be afraid to try new things! Embrace new experiences and being out of your comfort zone, that’s where growth happens. Be open to new challenges. Everything new is difficult until you just try."
