Winter Semester Operations Reminders (January 6, 2021)

January 6, 2021

Unfortunately, the holiday season did not bring a respite to our COVID-19 concerns. Throughout the country, we continue to see an increasing number of cases, with some hospital systems nationwide overwhelmed and strains of the virus raising additional concerns.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I hope you all had a restful holiday break. As we return to university activities I wanted to remind you of current plans and policies related to UM-Dearborn’s response to COVID-19.

Unfortunately, the holiday season did not bring a respite to our COVID-19 concerns. Throughout the country, we continue to see an increasing number of cases, with some hospital systems nationwide overwhelmed and strains of the virus raising additional concerns. While the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines brings hope, we still need to follow guidelines like wearing masks, maintaining social distance, washing hands frequently and staying home when sick, to help keep ourselves and our communities safe.

If you traveled during the holiday break, please review the travel guidance located on the website with information on how best to keep your friends, family and community safe.

The university has instituted plans for the next few months, outlined below, that will aid in keeping the campus community safe.

  • Courses for the winter semester will begin on Wednesday, January 13 with all remote instruction. All staff and faculty who can work remotely will continue to do so.

  • On-campus activities will continue, as outlined below, through at least March 1.

    • Building Access will continue through the MCard Access and One Time Access processes. Please remember that at least 3 business days are needed to process access requests.

    • Reservable temporary workspace for faculty and staff (reservable spaces for students will not be available)

    • University Research - approved activities only, with students participating in necessary research-for-credit activities

    • Mardigian Library - external pick-up/return service near the library entrance

    • Student equipment and laptop lending coordinated by the Dean of Students Office

    • Assistance for students is always available via email at DearbornCOVIDsupport@umich.edu or phone at 313-593-5056

  • Information regarding on-campus activities beginning Monday, March 1 will be shared with the campus community by mid-February.

As shared in previous communications, Michigan Medicine is managing the COVID-19 vaccination program for the campus community. Michigan Medicine has begun vaccinating U-M employees and students in the Phase 1A category. All U-M students, faculty and staff that are interested in obtaining the vaccine must complete the Blue Queue questionnaire. Summary information regarding the vaccine program can be found on the COVID-19 website. Michigan Medicine has a frequently updated FAQ on its website which includes key information for U-M faculty, staff and students. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has posted the State’s COVID-19 vaccination prioritization plan and frequently asked questions online.

Please remember the university frequently updates the COVID-19 area of the website with important updates and information. It is a good first place to check if you are looking for guidance regarding UM-Dearborn’s response to COVID-19. You can also always email me at ldrabczy@umich.edu

The university will continue to monitor COVID-19 and follow any changes to the guidance from public health professionals. We will adjust our health and safety guidelines as required to prioritize the well-being of our students, faculty and staff. Thank you for your continued commitment to keeping our campus community safe.

Go Blue - Go Dearborn!
