What should I do if a student in my class is diagnosed with COVID-19?

If a student in a class is diagnosed with COVID-19, faculty members should follow this guidance.

Should I inform anyone at UM-Dearborn that I have tested positive for, or suspect I have, COVID-19?

Please know that the university community is here to support you as you recover from illness. It is most important that you are in contact with your healthcare provider, and the public health department. The public health department will make the necessary notifications to people you may have been in direct contact with. 

University of Michigan-Dearborn leaders continue to work with University of Michigan officials and health professionals to closely monitor the spread of COVID-19. Our goals are to deliver on our mission while protecting health and safety by minimizing the potential spread of the disease within our campus community. The following process has been established for UM-Dearborn employees who become ill with symptoms which resemble COVID-19 and/or test positive for COVID-19.

Student 

If you are a student, do not come to campus. Please call the Dean of Students Office at 313-593-5056 or email DearbornCOVIDsupport@umich.edu to alert the university so that we can connect you with the appropriate resources, monitor your progress and provide support. You are also encouraged to reach out to a medical provider if you have questions about recent COVID-19 exposure or symptoms. 

Faculty/Staff

If you are a faculty or staff member who becomes ill, please follow the steps outlined below.

Step One:

1a. Employee with symptoms: An employee develops symptoms which resemble those of COVID-19 and notifies the supervisor (faculty contact their department chair) of their symptoms. The supervisor directs the employee to notify Human Resources (HR) 313-593-5190 or email HumanResourcesDearborn@umich.edu. The appropriate HR Consultant will contact the employee for case management/follow up. The ill employee should stay home and keep their supervisor apprised of their situation.

1b. Employee tested positive for COVID-19: If an employee has a positive test for COVID-19, they must inform their supervisor (faculty contact their department chair) as soon as possible. The supervisor directs the employee to notify HR at 313-593-5190 or email HumanResourcesDearborn@umich.edu. The appropriate HR Consultant will contact the employee for case management, contact tracing, and follow up. The ill employee should stay home and keep their supervisor apprised of their situation.

Step Two:  

2a. Employee with symptoms: The supervisor directs the employee to notify U-M’s COVID-19 Hotline 734-764-8021, (Option1) which is supported by Occupational Health Services (OHS). The employee should follow the directions given by OHS, the test provider, or their primary care provider. 

2b. Employee tested positive for COVID-19: The supervisor directs the employee to notify U-M’s COVID-19 Hotline 734-764-8021, (Option1) which is supported by Occupational Health Services (OHS). The employee should follow the directions given by OHS, the test provider, or their primary care provider. 

 

Step Three (applies to both those with symptoms only and/or positive COVID cases): HR will manage the case with Work Connections. HR will also work with the Business Affairs Office, and the employee’s supervisor to complete paperwork for any workers comp cases (also managed by Work Connections).  

 

Step Four (applies to both those with symptoms only and/or positive COVID cases): The HR Consultant will work with the department supervisor and employee to let the ill employee know how to code the timesheet and manage time away from work (as appropriate).  

 

Step Five (applies to both those with symptoms only and/or positive COVID cases): The HR team will follow up with the employee during time away to answer questions and determine a safe return to work, using the information below. 

 

Step Six (applies to both those with symptoms only and/or positive COVID cases): HR will work with Work Connections to identify when it is appropriate for the employee to return to work.

 

I am a supervisor and one of my direct reports shared that they have COVID-19, what do I do?

Guidelines for Supervisors Learning of COVID-19 Positive Employees

If you encounter an employee or student employee that reports to you any of the following:

  • Feeling ill with COVID-19 symptoms,
  • Testing positive for COVID-19, or 
  • Having close contact or living with someone recently diagnosed with COVID-19

Student Employee 

If, as a supervisor, you learn of a student employee with any of the above, you are obligated to direct them:

  • To stay home and not come to campus for any reason,
  • To notify the Dean of Students office at 313-593-5056 or email DearbornCOVIDsupport@umich.edu. (The phone line is staffed, the email address is monitored by Student Affairs and the Dean of Students office is the central repository for student cases),
  • To notify Human Resources at 313-593-5190 or HumanResourcesDearborn@umich.edu and
  • To notify U-M’s COVID-19 Hotline 734-764-8021, (Option 1) which is supported by Occupational Health Services (OHS).

The Dean of Students’ office will reach out to the student employee and will ask a series of questions such as onset of symptoms, when did you test positive, and potential contacts while at work. The Dean of Students office works collaboratively with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Human Resources to identify potential close contacts for the local health department. 

In-person Faculty or Staff

If you, as a supervisor, learn of an employee with any of the above, you are obligated to direct them:

  • To stay home and not come to campus for any reason,
  • To notify Human Resources at 313-593-5190 or HumanResourcesDearborn@umich.edu and
  • To notify U-M’s COVID-19 Hotline 734-764-8021, (Option 1) which is supported by Occupational Health Services (OHS).

Only for a positive COVID-19 test:

They will receive a call from one of the UM-Dearborn contact tracers, please ask them to answer this call (this call will be coming from a cell line) as they will have a few questions. The contact tracers will be someone from the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) or Human Resources, who collaborate with the OHS to expedite potential close contacts.  

Fully Remote Faculty or Staff 

If you learn of an employee with any of the above, you are obligated to direct them:

  • To stay home and not come to campus for any reason,
  • To notify Human Resources at 313-593-5190 or HumanResourcesDearborn@umich.edu and
  • To notify U-M’s COVID-19 Hotline 734-764-8021, (Option 1) which is supported by Occupational Health Services (OHS) (This is just for case management).
  • If they are not feeling ill, they may be able to continue working, however, please work with Human Resources to ensure a safe and appropriate work plan.

 

Where can I find information regarding the number of COVID-19 cases on the UM-Dearborn campus?

A university COVID-19 data dashboard tracks COVID cases and the number of health screens being completed each week at academic buildings. Other information can be found on this dashboard including our campus communication policy related to COVID cases and criteria that will determine if we need to pivot to fully-remote learning at any point during this semester.
