Regents Approve UM-Dearborn Operating Budget and Tuition Rates (June 16, 2022)

Dear Colleagues,

Today, the U-M Board of Regents affirmed University of Michigan-Dearborn’s commitment to student success, academic excellence, and talent retention by approving the university’s $165.4 million 2022-2023 general fund operating budget. This forward-looking budget continues our commitment to student success and accessibility and will help support the atmosphere of excellence we count on at our campus.

The fiscal year 2023 budget includes a 3.6 percent tuition increase for full-time in-state undergraduate students, which aligns with the Higher Education Price Index and is well below what the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics’ recently shared annual inflation rate of 8.6 percent. This increase reflects our commitment to providing a quality learning experience while remaining fiscally prudent.

In order to carry out our responsibility to provide quality opportunities for talented students throughout our region, the university has created numerous new programs, including expanding the Go Blue Guarantee to our campus and restructuring tuition to encourage students to graduate faster without taking on more debt. Information about these programs and more detailed tuition rate information can be found on our website

Another critical aspect of the latest budget involves investing in energy efficiency upgrades to help us reach our sustainability and carbon neutrality goals. Modest investments will also be made in deferred building and infrastructure projects and technology. Additional details about these projects can also be found on the news section of our website.

The success of our students also depends on the excellence of our faculty and staff. The budget includes a 4 percent merit increase pool for employees to ensure we continue rewarding and retaining our top talent. The merit pool and a minimum $15-an-hour wage for all permanent workers on campus act as investments that will allow our entire campus community to have a more secure and bright future. It helps us uphold our mission to serve the public and provide a high-quality education and workplace in our region.
