10 | ANNUAL REPORT 2017 11 | ANNUAL REPORT 2017 HIGHLIGHTS BEC YEAR IN REVIEW 2017 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS): For the first time in UM-Dearborn history, the BEC became an exhibitor at the NAIAS in the AutoMobili-D space. Talent Recruitment: In partnership with UM-Dearborn co-op and experiential learning offices, the BEC directly facilitated over 90 internship/co-op placements at corporations and small businesses in 2017. APRIL Executive Engagement: The BEC and College of Business Internship Career Management Center (ICMC) hosted the 2nd Annual Finance Forum. The event highlighted opportunities and career tracks available to finance majors and included an opportunity for students to network with experts, attend a panel discussion, and participate in a Q&A session with Henry Ford Health System, Key Bank, Raymond James and the Detroit Land Bank. MAY Research: The BEC held faculty research matchmakers with DTE Energy and Hitachi Automotive Systems. CECS faculty met with met with executive leadership from each company to identify potential partnership opportunities for research and development. Presentations were given on topics related to electric power engineering, electrical transmission, nuclear, gas, engineering project management, cybersecurity, materials/manufacturing, vehicular networking, human-machine interface, stereo vision and augmented reality. AUGUST Event Partnerships: The BEC and CECS sponsored “Tech Takeover” in partnership with Automation Alley. The event included an overview of smart mobility, security risks and privacy implications in the next generation of mobility, as well as recent research advances in security and privacy protection. OCTOBER The BEC and Formula SAE combustion car team hosted a networking event with MAHLE. The event connected engineers and executive leadership with students to learn more about the team’s current projects and how to further engage. NOVEMBER CECS faculty and Dean Tony England conducted a site visit to Omron America’s headquarters in Illinois for a day-and-a-half exchange on research and technical interests with Omron corporate officers and technical staff. Areas of mutual interest included robotics, automation, vision, safety, PLCs and healthcare. FEBRUARY The BEC and Office of Career Services hosted a talent engagement tour for students at the Quicken Loans headquarters in downtown Detroit. ZF TRW hosted “Engineering Energy,” an information session on co-op opportunities for College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) students. MARCH In partnership with Automation Alley, the BEC hosted “60 Minutes to Success,” an informational session for small businesses on grant programs offered by UM-Dearborn through its affiliation with the Michigan Corporate Relations Network (MCRN). JANUARY CORPORATE PARTNERS COMMITTED $460,000 FOR THE NEW ENGINEERING LAB BUILDING (ELB). THE BEC DESIGNED AND LAUNCHED UM-DEARBORN ATHLETICS’ FIRST SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM. THE BEC SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED THE BUSINESS AND FOUNDATION ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM, AN INITIATIVE TO MERGE CAMPUS FOUNDATION RELATIONS WITH THE BEC TO ENHANCE SERVICE OFFERINGS TO INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONSTITUENTS.
