The Business Engagement Center, as a member of the Michigan Corporate Relations Network (MCRN), offers a wide range of resources to local companies including the Small Company Innovation Program (SCIP)/ Technology and Commercialization Assistance (TCA), Small Company Internship Award Programs (SCIA), and access to the expertise and resource portal. This past summer, eleven students from across the university worked at paid internships with growing small businesses in Michigan, thanks to this partnership. Funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), MCRN’s Small Company Internship Award (SCIA) program provided funding to companies to hire students for internship or co-op positions. Students from CECS, COB and CASL were placed with growing small companies that pay an average of $15 per hour. Many of these students are offered long-term positions within the company. This is mutually beneficial for both the company looking to fill critical talent shortages and the student who gains in-depth cross-functional learning only offered through experiential learning opportunities. THE OAKWOOD GROUP A third-generation, family-owned automotive supplier, the Oakwood Group has been partnering with UM-Dearborn for more than 25 years. That relationship has grown and evolved substantially in recent years and the university is now the Oakwood Group’s school of choice for recruiting interns, many of whom go on to full-time employment with the company. “Our internship program with UM-Dearborn has become a pipeline of talent for the next generation of our company,” said Erik Huntley, corporate HR manager. Oakwood’s small- company setting affords students the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the design-to-production phases of their products, Huntley said. They are learning how to manage programs in the real world while simultaneously learning the theory behind the application, along with the culture of our company, he added. “UM-Dearborn students are hard-working people who want to make an impact wherever they are,” said Huntley. “The students who have joined our program over the years have taken a ton of initiative, found solutions to problems and had fun while doing it.” He said he appreciates that the faculty and staff at UM- Dearborn are so accessible and willing to assist Oakwood in their employment and research efforts. “As the demand for talent, creativity and technology grows in our industry, we’re excited to have a partner like UM-Dearborn that can support those needs,” he said. Oakwood was one of the recipients of an MCRN/SCIA award this summer, hiring engineering student Joshua Johnson. He will continue his internship through the 2017-18 academic year. “The Small Company Internship Program definitely helped to add capacity,” Huntley said. “Our internship program with UM-Dearborn has become a pipeline of talent for the next generation of our company.” + SMALL BUSINESS ENGAGEMENTS CORPORATE RESEARCH $3M KEY INDUSTRY PARTNERS $2.7M*
