ENGINEERINGLABORATORYBUILDINGForthepast17yearsU.S.NewsWorldReporthasrankedUM-DearbornsCollegeofEngineeringandComputerScienceCECSamongthenationstopundergraduateengineeringprograms.Itshardtoarguewiththeirdecision.ousandsofengineersandcomputerscientistswithclosetiestoUM-Dearbornhavesparkedtechnologicalbreakthroughsthathaveamajorimpactonthewayweliveourlives.InaneorttofurtheradvanceengineeringandcomputerscienceeducationtheuniversityplanstoreplaceitsEngineeringLaboratoryBuildingELB.eprojectwhichwillcost90millionwillfocusonprogrammaticgrowthandwillenableopportunitiesforinclusiveK-12andcommunitycollegeoutreach.iswillallowCECStofacilitateentrepreneurialmultidisciplinaryproblemsolvingandcomplementthedevelopment-orientedlabsofitsindustrypartners.eprojectisbeingdesignedwiththegoalofdoublingthenumberofCECSgraduatesandincreasingcapacitytoaccommodateallappliedresearchrequestsfromindustry.eELBwasoneoftherstbuildingsoncampusandithasexhausteditspotentialasourprimaryengineeringclassroomandteachinglaboratorybuildingsaidCECSDeanTonyEngland.AnewELBwillestablishacreativeandinvitingenvironmentthatcanimproveourfutureabilitytoattracttheregionsleadersandbest.SCIENCEBUILDINGScienceaectseverythingintheworldaroundusfromourhealthtotheenvironment.In1959UM-DearbornconstructeditsScienceBuildingtogivestudentsandfacultyanopportunitytoconductgroundbreakingresearchthatplaysakeyroleinmanyaspectsofourlives.FrombiologistsstudyingtheeectsofprescriptiondrugstogeologistsstudyingclimatechangeresearchthatstemsfromtheScienceBuildingimpactsoursocietyforthegreatergood.Duetoanincreaseinsciencemajorstheuniversityisundertakingamuch-neededrenovationoftheScienceBuilding.Constructionalreadyisunderwayona51millionrenovationpartiallyfundedbya30millioncapitaloutlayapprovedtwoyearsagobyGov.RickSnyderandtheMichiganLegislature.Privatefundingisnecessarytomodernizeequipmentandsupportstudentresearchaswellastofacilitateotheractivitiesthatwillprovidestudentswiththenecessarytoolstoexcelinandbewellpreparedforsciencecareers.ArenovatedScienceBuildingwilltransformthewayweteachscienceatUM-DearbornsaidMartinHershockdeanoftheCollegeofArtsSciencesandLetters.Scienceisbyitsverynatureexperimentalsowemustexposeourstudentstoalabenvironmentasmuchaspossible.ArenovatedScienceBuildingwillallowustodothat.MARDIGIANLIBRARYLibrariesaresynonymouswithlearning.atswhyUM-Dearbornopeneditslibraryin1980.OverthepastthreedecadestensofthousandsofpeoplehavevisitedMardigianLibrarytoreadbooksscourtheInternetandstudyforexams.Itsoneoftheuniversitysmostcriticalassetsasthelibraryhelpspromoteeducationandfosterscommunityengagement.Butthewayinwhichpeoplegatherinformationhasvastlychangedsince1980.Informationisjustaclickawaythesedayswhichsuitstheyoungergenerationsfast-pacedlifestyle.UM-Dearbornplanstoreneitsstrategyforwhatitmeanstobeaphysicallibraryinadigitalagebyrenovatingitslibrary.eMardigianLibrarywillbeanessentialpartoftheUM-DearbornexperienceagatheringplaceforlearnersacampushubforacademicsuccessandinterdisciplinarycollaborationandacatalystforintegratedlearningandcommunityengagementsaidLibraryDirectorElaineLogan.eMardigianLibraryofthefuturewillbeamultipurposeeducationalcenterthatcombinesahigh-techinteractivelearningcommonswithquietspacesforstudyandgroupwork.Itwillfunctionasaservicehubandcampus-wideresource.ArenovatedScienceBuildingwillhelpUM-Dearbornaddressanincreaseinsciencemajorswhileprovidingthemwiththenecessarytoolstoexcelinandbewellpreparedforsciencecareers.ArenovatedMardigianLibrarywillreflectamultipurposeeducationalcenterthatcombinesahigh-techinteractivelearningcommonswithquietspacesforstudyandgroupwork.THECONCEPTFORTHEENGINEERINGLABORATORYBUILDINGLEFTISSUBJECTTOFINALAPPROVALBYTHEUNIVERSITYOFMICHIGANBOARDOFREGENTS.19
