PAYINGITFORWARDPHILANTHROPYHASCONNECTEDMEWITHMANYOFTHEBASICprinciplesandvaluesthatIholdinhighregard.ThefactthateveryoneisintrinsicallyvaluableanddeservestobetreatedassuchisthemostimportantprincipleandIendeavortoembodyitdaily.OneorganizationthatIfeelhascontributedtomygrowthinunderstandingandimplementingphilanthropyisUniversityofMichigan-DearbornsStudentPhilanthropyCouncil.ThisorganizationwasfoundedbyUM-DearborngraduatesJasonDavisandKristinMcDonoughwhounderstoodtheimportanceofgivingbackonacollegecampusanddidtheirbesttohelpmeandotherstudentsdevelopawarenessofphilanthropyandhighlightitsimpact.UsingtheStudentPhilanthropyCouncilasatooltohelpmecomprehendphilanthropyIbeganhelpingothersunderstandhowtogivebackonadailybasis.ThrougheventssuchasTuitionFreedomDayandDearbornDifferenceIhelpedcultivateanunderstandingofphilanthropyatUM-Dearborn.ThepointwhereIknewIwasmakingsignificantstridesinthisnewunderstandingwaswhenfriendsandstrangersalikewouldactivelyapproachmetolearnmoreaboutphilanthropyandaskhowtheycouldgetinvolved.ItwasatthatpointwhereIbecameconsciousofthefactthatIhadbecomeateacherstudentandadvocateforphilanthropywithoutevenrealizingit.Irecentlycametotherealizationthatmyinvolvementinstudentorganizationsisanothersourceofphilanthropy.Timealongwithtalentisakeyresource.Combinethatwithacauseorpurposealongwithotherswhoarejustaspassionateasyouareandyougetaproductiveorganization.Oneofthebiggestaspectsthatseemstobeoverlookedisthatphilanthropyisatwo-waystreetmeaningthatinordertogetyouhavetogiveandviceversa.Intermsofstudentorganizationsyourallyaroundcausesthatyouarepassionateaboutwhilelearninghowtofine-tunenecessaryskillsthatcontributetoyourprofessionaldevelopment.MyexperienceontheStudentPhilanthropyCouncilhasinspiredmetogivebacktomycommunity.ThispastsummerIworkedwithPublicAlliesMetroDetroitandtheDetroitWaterBrigadetocollect1000gallonsofwaterforDetroitresidentswhohadtheirwatershutoff.WespentaweekcollectingwaterfromfriendsneighborsandcommunitymembersthendroppeditofftotheDetroitWaterBrigadeheadquartersindowntownDetroit.TherearemanythingsinthisworldthatmakeusfeelhelplessbutthroughthissmallactIfeltempoweredtomakeasmallcontributiontoimprovepeopleslives.AlthoughitisnotapermanentsolutionwaterisabasichumanrightandIwasabletohelppeopleobtainit.Iwasabletoworkwithacommunityandeducatepeopleontheissuewhilehelpingthemfindsolutions.Thoseskillswillbenefitmefortherestofmylife.FirstPersonUzmaAnwarisabehavioralsciencesmajoratUniversityofMichigan-DearbornwheresheplaysanactiveroleontheStudentPhilanthropyCouncil.MyexperienceontheStudentPhilanthropyCouncilhasinspiredmetogivebacktomycommunity.31
