Contractual firms can be a very important job search option:

  • Contractual firms have become a major source of hiring among many major corporations such as IBM Corporation and Ford Motor Company.
  • Contractual firms prepare more qualified and skill focused employees and college graduates by concentrating on a certain project.

  • Contractual firms offer graduates an opportunity to build their proficiency portfolio while earning a salary.

  • Contractual firms allow for "experimenting" with the position and the company. Gain visibility and experience.

  • Many major companies hire on contract prior to permanent employment.

Sample questions to ask when talking to contractual firms:
  • How long have you been in business? At this present location?

  • Who are your clients and for how long? How many employees have been placed with clients?

  • How long are the duration of your contracts?

  • Type of positions available? Are they generic positions or specific to my degree?

  • Will I receive benefits, medical, dental, etc.?

  • Who has access to my resume and how will it be marketed? Do I have any say?

  • What if I am interviewing on my own with the same client that you sent my resume to, and I am offered a job from them are there legal consequences?

  • If in training, am I under obligation to pay you back for training received and what is the time duration?

  • Is employment contingent only upon an opening with one client, or am I put on salary and then you seek an employer?

  • Am I eligible for unemployment benefits when contract expires?

  • When contract expires with company A, is there a log time I must sit out before working with Company B?

  • Is there a fee if I am hired by your client at end of contract and who pays this fee?

Most of these questions are answered in the contractual firms websites. Always do your research and know as much as you can before meeting with a recruiter.
