Are you planning on graduating soon? Read important information about being eligible for commencement.

If you are graduating (or plan to graduate) in the following terms, you may participate in the April 2020 Commencement:

  • Winter 2020
  • Summer 2020

August Candidates Only:

If you are an August graduate and wish to participate in Commencement, you must submit the Commencement Participation Request for August Candidates form. 

Communication regarding graduation and Commencement eligibility

All students expected to graduate in a specific term will receive email communication from the Office of the Registrar regarding details about Commencement participation, next steps, and timeline.

Students whose expected graduation terms are Winter 2020 and Summer 2020 will receive an email in early March 2020.

Applying to graduate

All students must apply to graduate. The Degree/Diploma application is opened and closed at specific intervals; this page outlines the application opening and close dates

Graduating with Honors

 

The following distinctions are noted on transcripts and diplomas at the time of graduation and are based on graduation GPA.

Undergraduate Graduation Honors

Undergraduate students who graduate and have obtained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 but less than 3.6 are recommended for graduation “With Distinction”. Undergraduate students who graduate and have obtained a cumulative GPA of 3.6 and above are recommended for graduation “With High Distinction”.

Graduate Graduation Honors

Graduate students who graduate and have obtained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.7 but less than 3.9 are recommended for graduation “With Distinction”. Graduate students who graduate and have obtained a cumulative GPA of 3.9 and above are recommended for graduation “With High Distinction”.

Graduation distinctions are not calculated and granted for graduate programs for any College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters graduate programs affiliated with the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

 

Participation exception requests and questions

Students who will not be able to attend the designated Commencement outlined above may petition the Office of the Registrar for an exception by sending an email to registrars@umich.edu (please include name, UMID number, expected graduation term, college, the Commencement participation request, and the rationale).
