Assistant Director for Success Programs
Tyler is the Assistant Director for Success Programs, working with First Year Programming and serving as a success coach for the Opportunity Scholars Program.
Tyler grew up in a rural community in central Illinois. Having been the first in his family to attend and complete college, Tyler developed a passion for working to help others like himself get to and through college.
Given his own educational journey, Tyler recognizes the many obstacles and barriers that can make getting a college education difficult. As such, his approach to work aims at supporting students in overcoming any barriers that may stand in the way of successfully finishing their collegiate careers.
Tyler, has received his Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts and Sciences with majors in Psychology and Communication, and a LENS Diversity Certificate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also received his Master of Arts in Student Affairs Administration from Michigan State University.
Sharon works mainly with the Prospective Degree Students and Personal Enrichment Students, in addition to serving as the Tutoring Coordinator. She also works with students on exploring their study skills and developing new "tools" that will help them excel as students.
She is a native Detroiter and alumnus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She lives locally with her husband and their pets and enjoys reading, history and anything artistic.
Her personal work philosophy is rooted in helping others reach their fullest potential. She believes that each of us has a unique story that shapes our identity and how we fit into the "Big Picture."
Sharon has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology/Art Administration (CASL, 1996) from our campus, as well as a Master of Educational Leadership Degree (Eastern Michigan, 1999). She is a member of the ACPA Commission for Spirituality, Faith, Religion and Meaning, and has presented at many local and national conferences.
Saulo Ortiz is a Success Coach for the Opportunity Scholars Program, first generation college students, and the greater UM-Dearborn student campus community. Saulo began his educational journey at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he studied psychology and Spanish. After graduating, Saulo worked as a Bilingual Community Health Worker at a healthcare nonprofit in Grand Rapids where he worked with limited income and undocumented families.
After reflecting upon how much he had grown in college, and the opportunities a higher education awards students, Saulo decided to go on and receive his Master’s Degree in Higher Education from GVSU to work directly with college students. “I want students to be reflective about all the experiences they have in college and get involved so they can grow and be ready for whatever may come next.” During his graduate studies at GVSU, Saulo worked with conditionally admitted students, recreation programs, and parent orientation. Before his role as a Success Coach, he also worked as a program assistant with TRiO Upward Bound.
As a Success Coach, Saulo values a holistic, student centered, and proactive approach to advising. Saulo builds genuine relationships with students and challenges them to be their best selves, while providing resources and reducing barriers to success.
In his spare time, Saulo enjoys being active, learning about personal development, and spending time at church and with friends and family.
