Initiating your VA Education Benefits

Common situations for student's using VA Educational Benefits and instructions. 

  • Complete the Application for VA Education Benefits online at the Veterans Online Application (VONAPPP) website. When the application process is completed, VA will issue a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to qualified individuals. The certificate will contain basic eligibility information including months of entitlement, the period of eligibility and benefit level.  The turnaround time to receive your COE from VA can be as long as 12 weeks or more.  Please keep this in mind when deciding when to process your application. 

    Drop off, mail, or fax your COE form to the Enrollment Services/Registration and Records office:

    Once you have registered for your classes, you must complete the Veterans Affairs Certification Request Form. This form must be completed each term in which benefits are requested. The Certifying Official cannot certify you for benefits until this form has been received.

  • If you have previously used your VA education benefits and you are now transferring to UM-Dearborn, you must complete the Request for Change of Program or Place of Training Form (form #22-1995). You may download this form from the Department of Veteran Affairs Forms website. You may also obtain the form from the Enrollment Services/Registration and Records office. Once you have completed this form it must be submitted to the Enrollment Services/Registration and Records office.
