Volunteers from four area colleges commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. with community service day Jan. 21

DEARBORN--- Volunteers from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, United Way Community Services, Davenport University, Henry Ford Community College, and the University of Detroit Mercy will spend Monday, Jan. 21 helping others on the ninth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Day, which commemorates the achievements of the late civil rights leader.

"The MLK 2002 Community Service Day continues the tradition of students, faculty, and staff from different campuses coming together on behalf of the less fortunate in metropolitan Detroit to commemorate the dream and legacy of Dr. King," said Eric Bolling, affirmative action coordinator at UM-Dearborn and co-chair of the campus committee organizing the event.

"While the betterment of the lives of others is the focus, it should be recognized that the agencies and those they serve are not the only beneficiaries. The positive feelings, understanding, memories and bonding that the diverse volunteers report as outcomes from their shared experiences are evidence of the important personal benefits that result from group voluntary activities," Bolling said.

About 380 volunteers will visit 17 sites around metropolitan Detroit, including nonprofit agencies, soup kitchens, senior centers and schools. The event was established in 1994 by UM-Dearborn and United Way Community Services.

Among the activities, volunteers will assist teenage girls with craft projects at Barat Child and Family Services, prepare a meal for residents of the Ronald McDonald House, and sort canned goods, restock the food pantry and do general cleaning at the Salvation Army-Wayne/Westland.
