UM-Dearborn honors Dearborn resident for outstanding academic achievement

DEARBORN---Dearborn resident Kristi Richards received the Chancellor's Medallion for outstanding academic achievement at the University of Michigan-Dearborn's May commencement exercises. The University presents the award to five graduates at each commencement.

Richards compiled a near perfect record on her transcript, including 13 A+ marks, while earning dual degrees: a bachelor of arts in economics and a bachelor of business administration in finance and management. This achievement earned her the Chancellor's Medallion award in both the School of Management and the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters.

Her academic awards include the James B. Angell Scholar Award, the William J. Branstrom Freshman Prize, the Financial Executives International Award for Academic Excellence, the Matilda Wilson Scholarship, the Target All-Around Scholarship, and class and University honors. She was a 2001 inductee to Beta Gamma Sigma, and was recently named the 2002 Honors Scholar in Finance. Richards also was a member of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Lettes honors program, and has appeared on the dean's lists for the School of Management and the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters numerous times.

Richards has served as secretary and president of the Finance Club, on the Academic Code of Conduct board, and the Internship Student Advisory Committee. She also was a tutor in economics and has been involved in many volunteer programs, including Focus: HOPE, St. Leo's Soup Kitchen and UM-Dearborn's Women on the Move program.

Off campus, Richards has given presentations and workshops to high school students on money management skills, college opportunities, and tips for leadership and organizational success. She has published her first book, "Making, Managing, and Milking Your Money: What Every Teen Needs to Know." She also created and maintains a web site on money and financial advice for teens and young adults.
