UM-Dearborn Child Development Center to hold fundraising dinner and silent auction on Oct. 15

DEARBORN---The Child Development Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will host a fundraising dinner and silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 in the Fairlane Center South building, home of the campus's School of Education.

The Child Development Center (CDC) at UM-Dearborn, one of only 10 percent of American childcare facilities accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, is also a critical element of the University's early childhood teacher preparation programs.

The theme of the dinner, "An Evening in Italy," reflects the CDC's commitment to a curriculum based on the arts-based, project approach adapted from Reggio Emilia, Italy. The town of Reggio Emilia was a hub of a robust Italian movement in early-childhood education after World War II. What is known as the "Reggio approach" has been disseminated throughout the world, and was cited by Newsweek as the best early childhood education program in the world. The CDC's leadership in the Reggio approach regularly brings researchers and visitors from across the nation to the CDC.

The CDC is located on the UM-Dearborn campus in three cottages of the historic Henry Ford Estate and one prefabricated module. The dinner and auction are part of a fundraising effort to build a new Center, which will substantially increase the campus's capacity to provide education for low income at-risk children, children with special needs, add infant care, and increase student teacher preparation opportunities.

The dinner will include a silent auction featuring sports and entertainment packages, jewelry, art works and other products. Master of ceremonies will be Lila Lazarus, who has been an anchor and health reporter for a Detroit television station. Tickets to the dinner are $75 per person or $525.00 per table of eight, with semiformal attire expected. For tickets or more information contact the UM-Dearborn Child Development Center at (313) 593-5424.
