Dr. Lachance earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1975 from the University of Evansville in Indiana; his master and doctorate degrees from the University of South Florida in 1977 and 1979, respectively. His Ph.D thesis was entitled “Extremal Problems in Approximation Theory”.

He joined the University of Michigan-Dearborn as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in fall 1979, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1984, and later to Full Professor in 1989. From 2010-2014, in addition to being a Professor of Mathematics, he served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. And in 2015, he became Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters.

Dr. Lachance’s research interests are currently in Geometrical Modeling, Numerical Range, and Singular Value Decomposition. Specifically, he has published articles in the areas of computer-aided design (CAD) and geometric modeling. He has over 35 publications in journals, proceedings, and trade magazines devoted to CAD.
