Biography and Education

Lisa Martin, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan Dearborn jointly appointed in Women’s and Gender Studies and Health Policy Studies.  She earned her doctorate in Public Health from the Health Behavior & Health Education Department at the University of Michigan.  She also holds a Master’s Degree in Gender & Cultural Studies from Simmons College.

Professor Martin teaches classes on gender and health, including women’s health, reproductive health policy, and health behavior and health education theory.  She also serves as the current Director of the Women's and Gender Studies (WGST) program.

Her research interests engage interdisciplinary inquiry of masculinity and depression, stigma, reproductive justice, and gender and health.  Professor Martin’s current research on reproductive health stigma and its effects on healthcare providers, communities, and policy seeks to bridge the divide between activism and scholarship.  Professor Martin’s research team has current collaborations with International Planned Parenthood Federation Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF-WHR), Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) Global and Marie Stopes International (MSI) to bring their intervention, the Provider Share Workshop, to Latin American and East Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Colombia, Peru, and Guatemala.  She has presented her research at national and international conferences including the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting, NAF, the Society for Family Planning Forum, and the National Women’s Studies Association Annual Meeting.
