Accessing the UM-Dearborn Home Drive

Problem/Question

How can I access my University Network Storage Drive on and off campus?

Overview

University of Michigan-Dearborn provides students, faculty, and staff with space on the campus file storage system. Your files can be accessed while on campus or from home. In fact, with an Internet connection and appropriate software on your computer (SSH or SFTP), you will be able to retrieve and store all your files from anywhere. When connected you will see two folders public files and private files. Public files is where you must upload your html pages for your personal web page. Private files are your personal files that you do not want to share publicly.

Note: Students, please be aware that your Home Drive goes away after you graduate. If required, please ensure to store your files on another storage medium (like Google Drive, Box...)

Solution

On-Campus [University Computer]

Your home drive will be automatically mapped (H: drive) if you are using a campus UM-Dearborn desktop computer. After logging in click the This PC icon and you will see the home folder drive on the list on the left side. The drive will have the letter ‘H’ next to it and titled with your uniqname.

On/Off Campus [Personal Computer]

Option 1: SFTP Client Application - This is the easiest way to get connected!

Download and install one of suggested SFTP Clients

Windows: WINSCP
Mac OS: Cyberduck

1. Connect to the UM-Dearborn VPN.

2. Open the SFTP or SSH Client software.

3. Click Quick Connect.

4. Type sftp://login.umd.umich.edu in the Host Name field.

5. Type your uniqname in the User Name field.

6. Click Connect.

7. Enter your password

8. Authenticate using Duo.

9. File directory with your public and private files will appear on the screen.

Option 2: Map the Network Drive - This is a little more involved than the first option.

You can map the network drive to your computer. Keep in mind that if you use this option off campus you will need to connect to UM-Dearborn VPN first.

1. Setup VPN: Windows | MacOS

2. Choose the correct network path for your drive. Remember to replace UNIQNAME with YOUR umich uniqname in lowercase letters

PC : \\umd-home.umd.umich.edu\UNIQNAME\
Mac : smb://umd-home.umd.umich.edu/UNIQNAME/

3. Map the Network Drive: Windows / MacOS

4. Your home file directory will appear and you can select from your private or public files.

Option 3: Linux Users - Please see Mount samba shares with using cifs

Linux: //umd-home.umd.umich.edu/UNIQNAME/
