Faculty Opt-In Add Policy

A modification of the add policy was approved effective Fall 2012. As indicated in an email from the Provost, the Add Policy is an Opt-In process.

General Information:

For Faculty who do not Opt-In, standard processing will remain in place for your courses. That is:

  • Students may continue to enroll in your course(s), in person or on the web, if the course is open and requirements and restrictions are met, through the end of registration.
  • Enrollment Services/Registration and Records (ES/R&R) will continue to enroll students from the waitlist into your course(s) if a space becomes available (except in COB**) through the end of registration.
  • ES/R&R will continue to enroll students who have 'written permission' from the instructor into courses (regardless of the actual enrollment in the course) through the end of registration.

Registration End Dates:
Fall 2014

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

**The College of Business Student Services Office will monitor and enroll students from the waitlist into business courses.

Important Information for Opt-In Only:

If you are opting into this process, it is imperative that you read all of the information below and follow these guidelines:

Guidelines:

Check the actual enrollment in your class and know the maximum limit prior to adding any students during the second week of class. Although the need for faculty to validate enrollment numbers prior to permitting entry was in the document approved by Faculty Senate and the Provost, it is important to restate it here to help avoid unintended over enrollment.

  • For instructors who have completed an Opt-In form, the course submitted for opt-in will be closed shortly after midnight at the end of the first week of class for the Fall term. The course will be populated with the Instructor Approved Add registration restriction code.
  • Instructors should be aware of the exact number of students enrolled in their class(es) before making decisions on an add request during this period. To obtain course enrollment numbers, visit UM-Dearborn Connect any time after midnight of the last day of the first week of class, but before you begin to approve entry into your course.
  • You may locate your enrollment numbers online at UM-Dearborn Connect without logging into the secure area. These numbers are in ‘real time.'

For enrollment numbers:

  • Go to UM-Dearborn Connect
  • Select Class Schedule from the main menu
  • Choose a term from the drop-down list, click Submit
  • Use the Class Schedule Search to pull up your class
  • Click on the course title/CRN link

The Detailed Class Information page will return displaying course enrollment information including Capacity, Actual, and Remaining seats for enrollment and waitlist seats. Crosslist seat information is also available. Enrollment numbers for crosslisted courses are shown as Cross List Seats . For crosslisted classes, YOU MUST use the Cross List Seats numbers to determine actual enrollment. See example below.

  • Overrides done electronically (and those done by written signature), will override the Instructor Approved Add Required registration restriction and the maximum/capacity seat limit on a course.
  • Class Rosters are available on UM-Dearborn Connect

Print or view your waitlist at the beginning of the second week of class (see additional information on waitlist below)

  • Waitlists are available in UM-Dearborn Connect
  • Beginning the second week of class, waitlist for courses that are coded with the Instructor Approved Add registration restriction code will be managed by the instructor.
  • Waitlists for crosslisted courses are now combined on one list.  Students are on the list in the order in which they signed up on the waitlist, irrespective of the section waitlisted.  For crosslisted courses, view or print a combined waitlist from UM-Dearborn Connect using the Summary Wait List link.

Enter electronic* overrides for students who have permission to register for your course.

Electronic overrides can be processed via UM-Dearborn Connect.

  • To enter an electronic override, obtain from the student his/her name and UMID. This information is needed to enter an electronic override. (If the student is on your waitlist, the student's UMID is listed on the waitlist in UM-Dearborn Connect).

To enter an override for a student:

  • Go to UM-Dearborn Connect
  • Select Faculty & Advisors Menu
  • Select Registration Overrides
  • Choose a term from the drop-down menu
  • Click Submit.
  • Enter the student's UMID
NOTE : In order to use the name query at the bottom of the screen, the student MUST BE ALREADY REGISTERED for one of your classes. In most if not all cases, this will prevent the search from working.
  • Click Submit
  • Verify the student's name, click Submit
  • From the Override drop-down menu, select Instructor Approved Add
  • From the Course drop-down menu, select the course to override, click submit
  • Confirm override by clicking submit

Important : The Instructor Approved Add override code bypasses the maximum limit on the course. Please be aware of your enrollment numbers.

* Although the electronic method is preferred, the Registrar's Office will accept written permission from students via instructor signature on an Add form. Your signature will override the Instructor Approved Add code and bypass the maximum limit on the course, identical to the electronic override.

General Information:

  • Permission of the instructor will be required to enter a course that is coded with the Instructor Approved Add registration restriction beginning the first day of opt-in.
  • The Enrollment Services/Registration and Records Office will not monitor enrollment limits for courses with the Opt-In Add code (It is not possible to do so without a tremendous amount of conflict.).
  • Students may drop a class during this same time period. Please view your class roster to determine drop or add activity.
  • Students who gain approval from an instructor to add a class must complete the action of adding or registering prior to the end of the add/drop period. Those students not completing the process during that time will be required to go through the petition process in his/her respective academic unit to late add.
  • Written permission from an instructor to add a course via an Add/Drop Form will be honored at Enrollment Services. Written permission will override the Instructor Approved Add code and bypass the maximum limit on the course, identical to the electronic override.
  • Overrides for courses may not be telephoned in or sent via email to the Enrollment Services/Registration and Records Office.

Waitlist

The opportunity for students to waitlist courses will remain open through the first eight days of classes for a full term, and the first three days of classes during a half term.

During the add/drop period:

The responsibility for managing enrollment in a course section lies with Enrollment Services/Registration and Records (ES/R&R) for all courses except the following:

  • College of Business courses**
  • Select lecture/lab Natural Sciences courses
  • During the second week of a full term only (fourth and fifth day of classes in a half term), courses that have the Registration Restriction Code: Instructor Approved Add. Waitlists for courses with this registration restriction are monitored by the instructor beginning the second week of classes in a full term (fourth and fifth day of classes in a half term) Permission of the instructor is required for entry.

**The College of Business Student Services Office will monitor and enroll students from the waitlist into business courses.
