Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences is home to the EconomicsHistory, and Political Science disciplines; interdisciplinary programs in Urban & Regional Studies and Community Change Studies; a master’s degree program in Public Administration and Policy; and Geography unit. 

Supplementing these academic areas are various internship opportunities for students through our Politics, Policy and LawEconomicsOttawa Internship, and Urban and Regional Studies Internship Programs. 

The Social Sciences Department also hosts an ongoing Research Colloquium and a Mid-East Lecture Series.  These diverse opportunities share a focus on the forces that have been affecting human individuals and groups in an ever-changing and increasingly complex world.

The Social Science department offers the following internship opportunities. Urban and Regional Studies also offers the URST Internship, which appears in the course schedule as URST 485. It offers students field experiences with businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies.

Research Opportunities

Economics - Invitation to do an independent study on Macroeconometric models of the U.S. Economy.

Political Science - The political science faculty support student participation in the annual Meeting of Minds, which provides undergraduate students and faculty at UM-Dearborn, UM-Flint and Oakland University the opportunity to come together to present and discuss their research.

Urban and Regional Studies - Urban and Regional Studies (URST) program majors are required to complete 6 credit hours of community based research.  This can take the form of any combination of an Academic Internship, an Independent Study or an Academic Service Learning Course.
