Rethink the Safety Challenge for Highly Automated Vehicles with Henry Liu

Friday, September 24, 1:30 P.M. (ET) Passcode: 371710
In the past ten years, significant progress has been made on the development of highly automated vehicles, particularly after the emergence of deep learning. However, to date, the deployment of automated vehicles is still very limited. The main reason that hinders the deployment and commercialization of automated vehicles is safety.  Because of the complexity of the driving environment and the rareness of safety-critical events, being capable to handle both “curse of dimensionality” and “long-tail problems” poses significant challenges to an automated driving system. To overcome these challenges, we will discuss two recent research projects we have been working on in the last several years. Professor Henry Liu is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is also the Director for the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (USDOT Region 5 University Transportation Center) and a Research Professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.
