Sponsored Research Updates: External awards, grant deadlines and changes to IRB Consent Form

External Awards

The following faculty members received grant awards this month:

Pravansu Mohanty, professor of mechanical engineering, received $1,541,995 from the Naval Health Research Center to continue his project to develop a manufacturing platform for custom biomedical prosthetic and implant fabrication.

John Cristiano, director of the Henry Patton Center for Engineering Education and Practice, received $502,868 from the U.S. State Department. This program will provide professional development fellowships to teachers, counselors and mentors in the Middle East and North Africa to enable them to improve the employment picture for students and young adults living in those areas.

Paul Richardson, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, received $290,779 in additional funding from the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Command to continue to provide robotic and vehicle automation expertise.

Zhixin Liu, assistant professor of management studies, received $79,032 from Ford Motor Company to improve the operational efficiency at Ford Motor Credit Company.

Eric Ratts, associate professor of mechanical engineering, received a $50,000 grant from the Denso Foundation to provide students with hands-on experience in designing and building an advanced cooling system.

Yi Lu Murphey, professor and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received $50,000 from Ford Motor Company to work on a project to maximize automotive fuel efficiency by creating driver specific vehicle speed profiles based on map data and traffic data sources.

Professional Development Grant application deadline is Oct. 15

Professional Development Grants provide up to $500 for materials or activities that promote faculty and lecturer professional development. In the past, funds have been used for travel to conferences, books, software, tuition, association memberships and research supplies.

All proposals are due no later than Oct. 15. Additional deadlines are possible if funding is still available after the October awards. Future deadlines would be: Feb. 15 and May 15

Changes to IRB Consent Form language

The University of Michigan Human Subjects Protection Program is accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP). The campus's research programs are currently undergoing a reaccreditation review. AAHRPP representatives look at all of the university policies and procedures related to human subject protection program to determine if the university has sufficient protections in place. As part of this reaccreditation, AAHRPP has determined that the Dearborn IRB must include the following paragraph on all consent forms:
"I understand that if I have questions regarding my rights as a research participant, or wish to obtain information, ask questions, or discuss concerns with someone other than the researcher(s), I may contact Debra Schneider in the IRB Administration Office, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, 1055 Administration Building, University of Michigan-Dearborn, Evergreen Rd., Dearborn, MI 48128-2406, 313-593-5468 or email [email protected]."
