United Way 2010 campaign kicks off

September 27, 2010

United Way logoThe 2010 United Way for Southeastern Michigan annual campaign begins this week.

This year's United Way's "Agenda for Change" campaign again focuses on areas that provide lasting solutions to the critical issues facing southeast Michigan today. These solutions provide metro Detroiters with the three building blocks needed for a good life: an education that leads to a steady job, an income that can support a family, and access to the basic needs. There has never been a greater need for help.

For specific information related to the "Agenda for Change" please visit http://www.uwsem.org/agendaforchange/index.html.

Faculty and staff will receive United Way information and 2010 pledge cards on Sept. 30. Each unit has been assigned an area coordinator who will distribute information kits and will be able to answer any questions regarding the campaign. This year's pledge cards are due by Oct. 29.

Faculty and staff may designate pledges specifically to one of the three United Way building blocks for a better southeast Michigan - education, income or basic needs. Pledges also may be designated to a specific agency supporting one of the three building blocks or to a specific United Way county other than Wayne, Oakland and Macomb. A complete list of supporting agencies can be found at http://www.uwsem.org/agendaforchange/index.html. Click on the individual building block for supporting agency information.

There are numerous ways to give including payroll deductions, credit/debit cards or a one-time check.

This year's campaign features the following social events to help raise campaign awareness and provide faculty and staff with opportunities to enjoy treats:

Tuesday, Sept. 28 - Ice cream social

Hudsonville Ice Cream will be on campus serving four of the company's most popular ice cream flavors. Stop by the Chancellor's Pond area (AB Courtyard), between noon and 1:30 p.m. for a scoop of ice cream. Donation required for ice cream with all proceeds going to the United Way. In the event of rain, the location will move to the EIC.

Tuesday, Oct. 5 - Campus kick-off fair

Stop by Kochoff Hall between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for lunch and prizes. The cost for lunch is a $5 donation to United Way, with payment at the door. All attendees will receive a raffle ticket for special prize drawings during the lunch.
