Events will commemorate 10th anniversary of 9/11

UM-Dearborn is partnering with ACCESS, the ACLU of Michigan, WDET and other local community organizations on a variety of events commemorating the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. The programs in Dearborn and Detroit under the theme “U.S. Rising: Emerging Voices in Post-9/11 America,” will be held on the days leading up to 9/11.

A panel discussion on how 9/11 shaped the lives of young activists will be held on Friday, Sept. 9 from 9-10:30 a.m. on the UM-Dearborn campus. The session will include a welcome from Chancellor Little and will feature WDET host Craig Fahle as the moderator with panelists Rashida Tlaib, Michigan state representative; Shirley Stancato, CEO, New Detroit; Linda Sarsour, director, Arab American Association of New York; Will Youmans, human rights activist and former hip-hop recording artist; David Knezek, student government president, UM-Dearborn and Asif Khan, student, UM-Dearborn.

UM-Dearborn students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a community service and intercultural connection called A-OK (Acts of Kindness) Detroit day on Sunday, Sept. 11. A-OK Detroit aims to transform 9/11 into a day of caring and service by bringing together diverse community groups with common missions of unity, peace, and mutual understanding. The project is in keeping with a White House initiative to make 9/11 an annual day of community service.

Volunteers from UM-Dearborn and a variety of community organizations will join together for a day of service at the Focus: HOPE’s campus in northwest Detroit. Volunteers will package food boxes, write letters to U.S. servicemen and women, and work in a community garden at Focus: HOPE. They will also pitch in to clean up vacant lots and abandoned homes in the neighborhood.
