Greenhouse science connects laboratory with community

There are no desks or chalkboards. Instead, there are shovels and greenhouses.

Emily Saarinen, assistant professor of biological sciences at University of Michigan-Dearborn, incorporates community outreach into her Environmental Science 301 course. A group of students recently traveled to Howe School in Dearborn, where they beautified the grounds with plants. "We're trying to incorporate community service with science," said UM-Dearborn student Tara Knapp.
