The University of Michigan-Dearborn senior hopes to land a career where she can help maintain and restore environmental balance.
But in order to land her dream job, Forbes first must earn a bachelor’s degree in environmental biology. Thanks to a scholarship she received from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL) Alumni Affiliate, Forbes is well on her way toward graduation.
“This scholarship has really made it possible to for me to continue to go to UM-Dearborn full-time this academic year,” she said. “I’m an adult student. I work, I have bills and it’s really a struggle maintaining a balance between these things. The financial side of it is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome, so this made a big difference for me.”
Since establishing the fund in 1995, the CASL Alumni Affiliate has awarded more than $110,000 in scholarships to nearly 90 UM-Dearborn students.
Alumni Affiliate members hope to generate more scholarship funding November 1 as they host November Indulge. The popular event, which includes auctions, beer, wine, live music and philanthropy, runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at UM-Dearborn’s Fairlane Center South.
“The goal every year is to impact as many as students as possible by raising money for our scholarship fund,” said affiliate coordinator Susan Gedert. “Last year, the affiliate surpassed $100,000 in total gifts, which was very exciting. Through generous support from UM-Dearborn alumni and friends, we hope to continue our mission to support students in their pursuit of a college degree.”
Guests can sample wine from some of the world’s leading vineyards and beer from local breweries, as well as bid on unique auction gems, including tickets to entertainment and sporting events, dining packages, hotel stays and holiday gift items. Indulge in a dinner buffet, while experiencing live jazz music in the Michigan Rooms.
Tickets cost $60, $15 of which goes toward the scholarship fund. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the Indulge webpage or contact Susan Gedert at [email protected].
