'Lyceum' celebrates 40 years

Emma Slonina was eager to get involved when she enrolled at University of Michigan-Dearborn four years ago.

Slonina sifted through a list of student organizations and eventually came across one that matched her interests. Lyceum.

“Oh, that’s my org,” she said.

Over the past four years, Slonina has performed just about every task for the University’s fine arts and literary journal. She capped it off this year as editor-in-chief.

Slonina will graduate this month, but before commencement, she wanted to recognize alumni who worked at Lyceum over the past four decades and shared her passion for the fine arts.

So she and other Lyceum staff organized a 40th anniversary party on April 19 at Fairlane Center South.

Several UM-Dearborn alumni who wrote poetry, took photographs or painted pictures for Lyceum returned to campus with about 40 other guests to celebrate the milestone.

“It was a great networking opportunity, as well as a great chance to learn more about our history as an organization,” Slonina said. “We wanted to show our past members that their hard work was being continued and that we appreciated all that they’d done for Lyceum.”
