Lavada Smith is new head of circulation services

The Mardigian Library announces the promotion of UM-Dearborn alumna Lavada Smith to head of circulation services. Smith assumes the responsibilities of Kathy Irwin, who is now the library director of Mott Community College in Flint.

Smith was a library student assistant from June 1995 through 1998 while she earned her bachelor's degree in education. After graduation, she worked as a library assistant at Marygrove College until 2000 when she returned to work at the Mardigian Library.

Impressed with her work in both the circulation and interlibrary loan (ILL) departments, Smith was encouraged to pursue a master's degree in library and information science (MLIS). She decided to pursue that degree in 2005 and began her studies at Wayne State University, where she completed her MLIS degree in June 2008.

Her position and responsibilities at the Mardigian Library were expanded and restructured in August 2008, resulting in a promotion to assistant librarian. Smith managed ILL, a fast-growing service as faculty and students search the Internet and request research materials owned by libraries around the world. She became an expert at locating hard-to-find materials for Library users who frequently came to her for help and advice.

Test drive the Library's new one-search tool

The library invites everyone to take our new one-search tool for a test drive. We are beta-testing Summon ™, a new tool that allows researchers quick access to reliable, credible resources in all formats: audio, video, print, or digital. One simple, Google-like search provides instant access to authoritative information. Narrowing search results is easy using methods such as filtering, faceting and sorting.

Library staff would like to hear what users think of this new search tool. Visit the Library's web page (the search box appears at the top of the page) or click here to begin searching. More information about Summon ™ will be provided in the coming months.
