Proposal Submission Process

Researchers who are planning to submit an external grant proposal are asked to notify the Dearborn Office of Research & Sponsored Programs at least three weeks before the proposal is due to the sponsor.  Please note that three weeks may not be sufficient lead time if a proposal is complex or is being submitted through the grant.gov proposal submission portal.  The earlier we know about a proposal the more assistance we can provide.

As soon as we receive notification that a proposal is going to be submitted, research office staff will work with the researcher to prepare the budget and verify that the proposal documents conform to the sponsor guidelines.  If proposals are submitted through grants.gov, we also complete all of the sponsor forms and upload the proposal documents.

Additionally, we will begin the Proposal Approval Form which contains all of the administrative information about the project. When the budget, budget justification and project summary are uploaded to the completed PAF, the researcher will electronically sign the PAF and route it to their department chair and dean for approval.  The director of Research and Sponsored Programs will also approve it on behalf of the campus.

The proposal then is routed to the Division of Research Development and Administration (DRDA) in Ann Arbor for final approval and signature by the University of Michigan's Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR).  DRDA submits the proposal to the sponsor in most cases.

**The DRDA proposal submission deadline policy is at noon 4 business days prior to the sponsor deadline. **

For questions or help with finding funding, creating a project budget, the eResearch system, or how to complete the PAF, please call the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs at 593-5468 or email [email protected].
