Interim Chancellor Gabriella Scarlatta provided the following university updates at the Oct. 16 Board of Regents meeting:
- UM-Dearborn held a successful Conversation with the Chancellor event on Sept. 23.
- The university also welcomed several guests from Ann Arbor:
- During Homecoming Week, President Grasso held a campus forum. The audience participated in a lively question-and-answer session, after hearing about some important priorities on the Ann Arbor campus.
- Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer Ravi Pendse presented on cybersecurity and vulnerabilities.
- Vice President for Communications Richie Hunter and several members of her team presented on the Look to Michigan national campaign.
- UM-Dearborn faculty have been awarded two recent grants for their impactful research:
- Associate Professor of Neurobiology Elena Zhang has been awarded a $1.1 million grant, in partnership with Washington State University, from the National Institutes of Health. This project will pioneer an innovative nanotechnology that zeroes in on injured brain regions. The approach is expected to lead to brain injury treatment that is more effective with fewer side effects.
- Professor of Mechanical Engineering Alan Argento has been awarded a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, in partnership with Dr. Guan Xu at the University of Michigan Medical School. Their project has the potential to improve decision-making about surgical intervention in patients with glaucoma.
