Grant Awards:

Natural Science faculty assistant professors Simona Marincean, assistant professor of chemistry; Dan Lawson, associate professor of chemistry; and Jin Wang, assistant professor of physics, collaborated on an $8,100 Office of the Vice President for Research award to purchase computation equipment for modeling atomic and molecular structures.

Student Research Funding

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs has several funding opportunities available for UM-Dearborn students. Three of the programs are faculty initiated and two of the programs are student initiated. A full description of all of these programs and the evaluation criteria may be found in the Campus Grant Guidelines.

Faculty Initiated Programs:

Research Assistantship Grants are used to pay for student research assistants to work on research conducted by full-time UM-Dearborn faculty members. Grants provide up to $500 for standard assistantships and $1,500 for seed assistantships are available for work leading to an external grant proposal. Applications are accepted any time and may be made by e-mail to [email protected].

Undergraduate Research Fellowships provide stipends of $2,500 to UM-Dearborn undergraduate students whose academic record demonstrates preparedness and commitment to excellence. Students are invited by a UM-Dearborn faculty advisor to conduct independent research under the faculty member's direction. The deadline for nomination is Feb. 15.

Student Group Travel to Present Research Results Grants are available to assist student groups with travel costs to present papers at professional meetings and conferences. Faculty advisers apply on behalf of students in their labs, student clubs, or organizations; up to $300 per student is available. Deadlines for group travel support requests are Oct. 15 and Feb. 15.

Student Initiated Programs:

Student Research Grants: provide up to $500 for independent research projects by UM-Dearborn students. The project must be supervised by a faculty member and the project will ordinarily be related to the student's major field of study. Applications may be submitted any time and must conform to the program guidelines.

Student Travel Grants: Awards are available to assist individual students with travel costs to present papers at professional meetings and conferences. Students and/or faculty advisers may apply by e-mail at any time to [email protected]. Please include the title of the paper or poster, the names of all of the authors, the name and location of the conference, the dates of the travel, and any additional sources of funding. Funding is currently available for travel to conferences that take place after July 1. The maximum award is $300.
