New External Awards

The following faculty received external grant awards:

Pankaj Mallick, director of the College of Engineering and Computer Science's Interdisciplinary Programs, received $285,285 in continuation funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to support the Center for Lightweighting Automotive Materials and Processing.

Alan Argento, professor of mechanical engineering, received $70,662 from Smith Bucklin to research the uses of soy materials in thermoplastics and rubber.

Michael Thomas, Academic Support and Outreach Services, received $24,840 from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth to fund the fifth year of the GEAR UP/College Day program.

Hafiz Malik, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received $7,975 from Quaid-i-Azam University to support a project to develop protocols for secure vehicular communications and train a visiting scholar in the area of security and privacy of Vehicular Networks.

Krisanu Bandyopadhyay, associate professor of natural sciences, received $7,500 from U-M's Office of the Vice President for Research that will enable him to research the in situ generation of metallic and bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts.

Awards will be made in the following categories:

Faculty Research Initiation & Seed Grant: This award provides up to $6,000 to full-time faculty for research projects which are designed to lead to proposals for external funding.

Faculty Research Support & Maintenance: The award provides up to $6,000 to full-time faculty for research projects in disciplines where there is little chance for external funding.

CASL Senior Faculty Scholarship Grant: Two grants are awarded annually and consist of either: one course buyout for the semester following the award announcement or a $3,000 stipend. This award is limited to full-time CASL faculty who are working on either a manuscript or a major external grant proposal.

Undergraduate Research Fellowship: This $2,500 fellowship is given to UM-Dearborn undergraduate students whose academic record demonstrates preparedness and commitment to excellence and who are invited by a UM-Dearborn faculty advisor to conduct independent research under his or her direction.

CASL Faculty Summer Research Grants: Two $7,000 grants are awarded to tenured or tenure-track faculty for research and other scholarly activities to support work which will lead to a proposal for external funding.

Faculty Small Research Grant: provides up to $800 to full-time faculty for research and other scholarly activities.
